Winter 2021 Book Discussion Series-"Hooray for Hollywood! The Golden Age of Cinema"

We'll be discussing Marie Benedict's The Only Woman in the Room.

Long recognized for her beauty on the big screen, Hedy Lamarr is finally acknowledged for her brains in the latest outing by Benedict. In 1937, young actress Hedwig Keisler flees her abusive, controlling husband, and leaves behind the Nazi regime for London. The Austrian Jew makes her way to L.A., where she signs a lucrative contract with MGM as Lamarr. With the outbreak of WWII, the self-taught inventor uses the knowledge she overheard from her arms-dealer ex-husband to develop a radio communication device, for which she received a patent. Her early scientific contributions in frequency hopping spread spectrum were later adapted into today’s wireless technology (e.g wi-fi, Bluetooth, cell phones, etc.)
