Winter 2021 Book Discussion Series-"Hooray for Hollywood! The Golden Age of Cinema"

We'll be discussing Melanie Benjamin's The Girls in the Picture.

Benjamin’s novel of historic fiction follows the careers and friendship of two of Hollywood’s earliest female legends: “America’s Sweetheart,” silent screen star Mary Pickford, and screen-writer Frances Marion. In alternating chapters, Benjamin transports readers across six decades as these historic figures struggle for success as women in the world of movies, all the while resisting the pressure to conform to society's rules. Cameos abound throughout the narrative as Hollywood notables Chaplin, Mayer, Valentino, Gish and others make appearances.
